Enabling Riders of All Skill Levels to Cycle

About Us

Golden Rollers

Golden Rollers primary focus is the Trike Club program, a free bicycle-based recreation and exploration program for people ages 50 and older. Program sites are located at recreation centers throughout Austin and San Antonio, providing seniors the opportunity to participate in socially engaged bicycle-based activity at places that they frequent.

Trike Club participants use three-wheeled adult upright and recumbent trikes to enable riders of all skill levels to cycle on urban trails, bicycle facilities, and neighborhood roads. The trikes provide a safe, low-impact means of exercise and exploration for individuals ranging from those with mobility and developmental disabilities to those who haven’t ridden a bike in decades – if ever.

Participants attend an orientation class where they are tested for body strength and balance, provided classroom instruction, and given the opportunity to practice starting, stopping, turning, and obstacle avoidance. Riders who pass orientation can then attend trail rides led by instructors, center staff, and community members.

History

The Golden Rollers program began as an older adult and senior bicycle and tricycle riding program. It launched in September 2015 at Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, conveniently located by urban trails and on-road bicycle facilities, like the Boggy Creek Trail and Pedernales protected bikeway. Since then, Golden Rollers has expanded the Trike Club to additional locations in Austin offering weekly classes to serve more seniors in accessible areas, grown to include Trike Club programs in San Antonio.
